Police officers and the law

Many times I am driving on 283 doing the speed limit. In the other lane a police officer will speed past me doing way over the speed limit. Very rarely do I ever see them in the right lane on a highway. I also seem them doing several other acts that would constitute a wrong against a citizen. Such as, parking in handicap spaces and fire hazards, not paying for their food and not obeying traffic laws. Do you believe that police officers should be allowed to do this? Are they above of the law? Take into this statement from a Long Island Police Department: in case the car stopped for a traffic violation happens to be that of a police officer, “you don’t summons another cop”. “It has been union policy to discourage Suffolk police officers from issuing tickets to fellow officers, regardless of where they work. ‘Police officers have discretion whenever they stop anyone, but they should particularly extend that courtesy in the case of other police officers and their families,’ Frayler said …. ‘It is a professional courtesy.’”

  1. No, they should not be above the law. They should have to follow the same laws that every other person in America has to follow. They should only be speeding if they are chasing someone or have to get to a crime scene/hospital/accident/etc. quickly. They shouln't be getting free food because all other citizens have to pay for their food. They should only park in handicap or fire hazard places if there is a crime or if they need to suddenly stop for a reason. Police should be following the same laws.

  2. No they are not above the law. They should be treated like every other citizen. Police officers if breaking the law while off duty should be able to get punished just ike a normal citizen. Unless in a real emergency where they should have there lights flashing and siren blaring otherwise they should be going the speed of every other citizen. Just because the the police doesnt mean they should get special treatment.

  3. I do not think that it is right for cops to able to do what ever they want. Yes, they are cops are they enforce the law, but they should not be allowed to be above the law. On the other side of the case though they are putting their lives on the line for their country but they should not get special priviledges with that. It was there choice to be a police officer. Yes they should get benefits, but not law breaking benefits.

  4. No I don't think they should get to do whatever they want. They are the ones that should be setting an example for the people to follow. If we get pulled over we don't get out of a ticket. When a police officer is off duty he is no longer a police officer. He is just a normal citizen so if he commits a crime or speeds he should be charged with it. Nothing about his job should make him above the law

  5. I don't think that police officers should be allowed to get away with so much. They should be setting a good example for people, not displaying what not to do. Police should act and behave like everyone else is expected to do.

  6. I personally do not believe police officers should be allowed to do this. They are average American citizens too and should have to obey by the same rules as everyone else. They are not above the law. If anything they should be following the laws more than anyone else and setting an example for everyone. They are the ones who know the laws the best and they should have to obey them.

  7. I think if a cop as a reason to speed or park in places where normal citizens can't park than it's fine. In the end the cops are trying to keep you and everybody else safe. However im positive many cops take advantage of their badge and uniform.

  8. I do not believe that police officers should be allowed to do any of this. They are not above the law in any way and it is very hypocritical. It is unfair that some officers think they can get away with this stuff. If they are going to enforce the law, they should also obey the law.

  9. No, I think this is very unfair. Police officers shouldnt get special treatment. they should have to follow the same laws as everyone else follows

  10. I do not believe that police officers should feel they have superiority over society. It is their job to protect citizens and enforce the law, but not to feel that they are superior to everyone around them. I totally understand that they need to be of authority in order to maintain a stable society, but they cannot let their egos come into the picture. Their official title is "law enforcement," and this is their duty.

  11. No, I don't think its okay that the police are doing this. Yes, they enforce the law but they should still have to follow the rules like everybody else.

  12. Police officers are not above the law. It is their duty to enforce the laws and should rightfully follow suit. In order to maintain a safe society, all members (even those of authority) should abide by the same legislation. Police should set an example, especially if they plan on ticketing you for the same laws they're breaking. A uniform doesn't give authority above law.

  13. Personally, I believe that if anybody isn't above the law, it is the police. They should provide an example of what to, or not to do. Police should get more than a fine if they break the VERY LAWS that they are required to uphold and enforce. A professional courtesy isn't letting someone slip by the law, im guessing that if a cop pulls over someone they know, that person wont get a freebee. If a cop breaks the law, they should be made an example of because if they do it, whats to stop other people from thinking its okay?

  14. I believe that police officers are definitly not above the law. They are citizens just like you and I and should be treated as such. Laws are set in place to keep everyone safe. Noone should be able to put my safety in jeapardy simply because they are an officer.

  15. Although it may seem unfair or unjust, police officers deserve more lenience regarding traffic violations and other petty laws. Special treatment is given to every profession in matters concerning them and although it may be biased, these favors keep our men in blue content and working, something that civil society needs desperately. I'm not advocating for a lawless police body, however lenience should be shown to those who provide protection and order in our society.

  16. I do not believe that police officers or other law enforcement personel should be above the law. Keeping peace and order, as is the job of our cops, can and should be done under the guidlines of our laws. During extreme situations, such as when lives are on the line, police officers may need to step outside the boudries of everyday order to perform their duty. But the idea of not ticketing a fellow officer just because they are an officer is obsurd. Due the crime, pay the fine... simple as that.

  17. Police officers are not above the law and should not consider themselves above the law. They are people just like us, they do need to protect our communities but they do not need to brake other laws to do so. It is hypocritical for a police officer to knowingly break laws while also enforcing them. A police officer needs to keep peace throughout the community not create more problems.

  18. I do not think it is fair that police officers think they can do whatever they want. They should have to follow the same laws as everybody else. They are no different than regular people. I do think that under certain circumstances police have to break the law, but only when they are trying to help others. Other than that police are not above the law.

  19. Police officers breaking the laws they are supposed to enforce is complete crap. They're just using the "do as I say not as I do" rule, which is also total crap. Cops are (or in my mind should be) just as subject to the consequences of the law as any other citizen and to make concessions for them is obstructing the law.

  20. I don't think that police officers are above the law. They should have to abide by the rules just like everyone else. Laws are made for a reason, to ensure fairness and safety for everyone. Just because you work for the law does not mean you don't have to obey it. The only time that police should be allowed to violate rules is when it is necessary for a case. For example, a cop should be allowed to speed while trying to catch a speeding criminal.

  21. I don't think that cops are above the law. They were average citizens before they were cops and they were treated as such so they shouldn't be treated differently now. However, the reality is that cops are treated above the law. I've never seen a cop pulled over by another cop. I can understand that it's common courtesy to give fellow cops breaks but then you have to do that same for average citizens.

  22. Personally, I believe that police officers should not be above the law. It's understandable that this particular profession requires times when negligence of the law is necessary, however, police officers should have to obey the laws like every other citizen.

  23. Police officers should not be allowed to disobey the laws that they are enforcing. It makes no sense. Police officers are not above the law by any means. The only reason way they would be able to break the law would be if there was a need to do so. For example a cop may have to speed in order to save someone else.

  24. NO, cops are definitely not above the law. Just like us they are average citizens doing their everyday job. Just because they have a responsibility to protect us citizens this doesn't give them the right to break the law, especially when they want to. In some cases it may be necessary to break the law for a serious matter. For example, if some robber is speeding down the highway after he just robbed a liquor store a cop should have the right to speed up to catch him. That is his job. If he is just speeding to speed then that isn't fair. Cops should be treated just like everyone else and shouldn't be above the law.

  25. i dont believe that police officers should be allowed to disobey driving laws. Just because they have authority, doesnt mean they are allowed to do whatever they want. They have laws just like everyone else does. It doesnt put them above the law. They just protect the law.

  27. I don't think that police officers are, or should be, above the law. I haven't seen the police over stepping their boundaries, but if they do it should only be if they're catching a criminal or something like that. Other than that they should be good influences, and follow the law that every day citizens have to follow.

  28. I do not think that police officers are above the law. Their job is to enforce the law. They need to set the example for everyday citizens which they don't, if they don't follow the laws themselves.

  29. i think that they should because its not right. if anyone else that is not a cop is doing these things they either get stopped or given a ticket. i believe it is only right in emergency situations, like pulling someone over etc. i dont believe they shouldnt be able to do this for there own personal use. i think that they take afantive of there power and there job title.
